D12: Results of experimental test on damage measures and reference values to be considered

Obelisk on the shaking table for the seismic testsIn this deliverable the experimental results regarding the damage measures for the displacement based safety assessment procedure defined in PERPETUATE are described. This procedure is based on the direct measurement of the displacement field during static and dynamic experimental tests  on cultural heritage assets and  macro elements. It requires proper limit states definitions which are slightly different with respect those required for conventional civil or industrial buildings (i.e the ASCE/SEI 41/06 specifications from US and the Eurocode 8 specifications from EU). In fact, in the case of single monuments like columns and obelisks   or historic buildings like churches and  mosques, due to the presence of specific typology of macro elements: rigid blocks, complex vault systems, slenderness of the walls, presence of wide halls, domes and drums with particular geometry, is necessary to define the proper assessment procedures which are different with respect the conventional structures. Aim of the shaking table experimental campaign within PERPETUATE  is to define proper limit states for cultural heritage assets and the related reference seismic input, taking into account both human life safety and specific conservation requirements (aesthetics, serviceability, reparability, …). These limit states will be correlated to proper damage measures, specifically defined for the different cultural heritage assets, in order to allow safety verifications. The Cultural heritage structures under test are: a 1:6 scaled model of the Egyptian Obelisk of St. Giovanni in Egyptian Lateranense Obelisk, Roma , Italy; a reduced scale mock-up of an arch, a full scale macro element of the vault of the mosque in Algier, a column made by a rigid block representative of a statue on marble anti seismic basement. Scope of the experiments is to define the limit states on the basis of the damage measures during the experimental tests. Therefore the damage measures are related to the following elements subjected to shaking table experiments:

×          1:5 reduced scaled model of the Egyptian Obelisk in S. Giovanni in Egyptian Lateranense Obelisk, Roma, Italy;

  • Experimental tests on an arch-pier system
  • a full scale masonry cross vault with asymmetric boundaries
  • marble anti seismic basement for artworks and high vulnerable statues.
